James Gualdoni Youth Activist Scholarship

The Novi Democratic Club will be awarding a scholarship to a local graduating high school senior to support their college, vocational school, or other post high school education, training, or activism.  This scholarship is given in honor of James Gualdoni, and will be awarded to a student who demonstrates progressive values, care for their community, and a willingness to work for change.

James Gualdoni was an early member and chair of the Democrats of West Oakland County (DWOC).  Through countless hours of phone calls, tireless canvassing, and consistent organizing and connecting with people, he is largely responsible for DWOC growing and being replaced by three separate, active local clubs, including the Novi Dems.  From his early years, when he attended Martin Luther King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech in Washington DC, to his last years at Fox Run, organizing delegates to flip that traditionally red precinct blue, he never stopped believing that as individuals working together, we could make a difference.  Jim inspired those around him to fight for our shared values, and the recipient of this scholarship will ideally embody those same characteristics.

Scholarship applicants are asked to respond to one of two prompts:

    • Describe an occasion when you had to organize other people to solve a problem.  How can you use what you learned to fight for social justice in the future?
    • What do you consider the most pressing issue in your community, and what solutions do you suggest to address the issue? (Please define what you mean by “community”).
